Both teams were hyped in pre-game.
Birds won the toss and elected to receive. Stud RB Steve Van Buren was the deep man, filling in for DeSean Jackson who looked a little shaky in pre-game. (Apparently he knows where the Paris clubs are too.)
Van Buren promptly took it to the house, eluding several would-be tacklers en route. One hundred yard TD. That’s him in the end zone. No obnoxious “celebration” here, just hands the ball to the ref, high-fives his teammates, and gets ready for the next play. We can celebrate when we win. He also pushed in the 2-pt conversion. Eagles 8, Chiefs 0.
The Birds are tough to beat when Coach Billy C. breaks out the good-luck Wilbert Montgomery throwback running back.
After the first Eagles TD, Chiefs got the ball and couldn’t do much. The rust was evident for the newbie coach. And the Philly D was just too strong. Chiefs fail on fourth down. Eagles ball. Van Buren soon punches it in on a 13-yard jaunt off-tackle left. The Honduran-born LSU alum would be the runaway choice for game MVP. Two rushes for 15 yds, two TDs, an extra-point, and two key tackles to boot. Not a bad day’s work. DeSean Jackson wiggles in for the 2-point conversion. 16-0 Birds before halftime. Chiefs are reeling.
After halftime, the Chiefs got the ball back again, and again couldn’t do much. Went for it on 4th down. Eagles safety Brian Westbrook crashed in for the huge sack. Eagles ball in KC territory. It didn’t take long for QB Randall Cunningham to find Wilbert Montgomery in the left flat. The 6th-round draft pick from Abilene Christian U. did the rest, taking it 26 yards to pay dirt. Eagles try something fancy for the extra point, and it fails. 22-0 Eagles.
After going up 22-0 in the 2nd half, the Birds go to a soft defense. Lenny Dawson finally warms up, and hits Tony Gonzalez for a 35-yard catch and run. The tight end goes out of bounds in the pic below. Gonzo had 3 catches for 49 yards on the day.
Couple plays later KC finally scores on a 25-yard pass to Jamal Charles. Miffed, the Eagles defense stiffens on the extra-point (pictured here). 22-6 Eagles. Charles finished with 2 catches for 34 yds., and 4 kickoff returns for a little over 100 yards. Dawson finished 7-10, for 89 yds and 1 TD.
Charles’ TD at the end of the game for KC.
Chiefs extra-point denied, sealing up a dominant performance by the Philly D. Five different players registered tackles. The Birds got solid contributions from all three phases in the convincing championship victory. Eagles win 22-6, Parisian Buzz Champions. Season 2 slated to commence soon. This being Europe, the last-place team gets relegated. So the ‘Skins drop out for at least one season. Three new teams will join: Chargers, Bears, & Patriots. They join the Eagles, Chiefs, Broncos, 49ers, and Rams to round out season two of The Parisian Buzz.
