Around 1999 or 2000 I rediscovered the game of electric football and after finding out about everything going on in the hobby, I like so many others, started that search for others in my area that were still playing the game. Through the local wargaming shop, Tabletop Games, I found a group of wargamers that since 1986-87 over one weekend every year get together and revisit the game of electric football and hold their annual Electra Bowl tournament.
Somehow, through life’s ups and downs, I lost touch with these guys and just this last week was told about a blog site called The Penny Whistle. Even though I didn’t realize it right off, these were the same guys still continuing the annual Electra Bowl that I had competed in back in 2000 with my quickly painted Browns ( the Chiefs were already taken by someone else in the group ).
Now in their 26th year, the Electra Bowl still goes on! The rules, fields and equipment they use today are still the same classic ones they used way back in the early days of the Electra Bowl with a few replacement parts here and there. This group shows that you don’t need custom men, scale fields or 40 page rule sets to still have fun playing the game of Electric Football! The game has been and always will be about getting together with friends, competing and sharing stories of past Electra Bowl grandeur!
Here’s to the Electra Bowlers of KC and to all those who still keep the simplicity and beauty of Electric Football alive in local leagues, in collections and in family leagues
across the world!
