Advanced customizing: FF.net Figures-Detailed Faces

Hi,

Everyone knows ff.net figures : http://footballfigure.net

This brand of miniatures figures is a great choice for all miniature football customizers. In this article, I’ll explain how to make real faces and modern helmets, with a stock ff.net figure. It’s quite simple if you follow the instructions.

Tools needed :

  • A lighter
  • A  modelling knife
  • Some fine sandpaper (320/400)

NOTE : in the article, I added a black ink wash on the figure head. I did it only to make better pictures, you don’t need to do that yourself !

!!!! VERY IMPORTANT : In that article, we use lighter, and sharp knife. SO IT IS RESTRICTED FOR ADULTS ONLY !!!!

1 – REMOVING THE FACEMASK

First step :

With the modelling knife, make a cut in the facemask molding following the redline on pic. Don’t go too deep, about 1.5/2mm is good.

You just need to make a fine cut into the facemask side, like on the pic :

Then, make the same, but from the front of the facemask. The idea is to cut just inside the border of the helmets, to create a nice relief and simulate a real helmet on a real athlete head.

Do the same on both sides of the figure. If you did it right, you should obtain that result :

On that picture, you can see the borders of the helmet. The rough face seems to be inside a real helmet.

OK…Now, we will take care of the nose  😉

2 – NOSE

With the modelling knife, make a cut on each side of the nose, like on the pic. You don’t need to make it with too much precision, we ‘ll take care of the plastic surgery later 😉

Once you did that on each side of the nose, make a cut like on the pic, on each side too. It will roughly sculpt the nose and cheekbones.

You should obtain that result :

Now, the figure already has a real face !  Now it’s time for plastic surgery. Depanding of the athlete you want to reproduce, you can re-cut the nose, modify the chin, etc…Finally, once you’re happy with the result, you should have something looking human enough for our purpose !

3 – FACE FINISHING STAGE

Now, take your lighter, and heat the figure face with it. WARNING : do not overheat the face : it will burn, and cause possible dangerous smoke or fire.  Be very carefull on that stage ! (for adults only)

The idea is to remove “flashes” caused by the modelling knife cuts we did.

Now with a sandpaper, remove last defects and smooth the surface of the face. You did it, your figurine has a detailed face, now !

4 – MODERN HELMET THE EASY WAY

It’s very simple and fast. First, cut the “hear” bits on each side of the helmet, to obtain a flat surface.

You should obtain that result :

Now, make a slight straight cut here :

And here :

The goal is to keep the front and rear parts of the helmets, to simulate the white “stuff” you see on real helmets (don’t know the name in english).

Now, it’s simple, you just have to remove the sculpted edge on the top of the helmet, like this :

And finally, with a fine sandpaper, clean the molding lines and other defects :

CONCLUSION :

We saw how to improve the look of the stock figure, bringing a lot of details, with simple technics. You don’t need to pass hours for a good overall result. Once you ‘ll paint the face with skin color, apply facemasks (and perhaps chinstraps), the “magic” will work, believe me !

here’s some figures I customized EXACTLY the way I described in the article, and painted.
